The radon company that eventually became ACE Radon began with my Father in 1987. He and an engineer started doing radon testing and mitigation in residences in the Denver Metro Area. Their work was on the cutting edge at the time, since the Radon Industry was not really formalized until 1990 with the Inception of the Indoor Air Quality Act and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification program.
In 1990, the action levels recommending radon mitigation varied widely around the world. The EPA action level is 4 PicoCuries per Liter (pCi/L) to the higher levels of 22.9pCi/l in Canada. The wide disparity of studies and different action levels contributed to confusion and misinformation regarding radon and its health risks. The phones did not ring very often and mitigation system installations were few and far between.
I worked for my father while I was going to college at UNC in Greeley. I became certified in Radon Mitigation and Testing in 1990. Shortly thereafter, my father decided to move to Hawaii and sold the company to me for $12,000. Although the struggle to keep the business going as a Sole Proprietor was challenging, I enjoyed the work and the interaction with people.
In 1997, ACE became a Sub-S Corporation as a mechanism to hire our loyal and hard working employees. Also, in the late 1990’s many additional radon studies were completed that solidified data regarding the negative health impact of Radon in Homes, Schools and Commercial Buildings. The Radon Industry and ACE gained momentum as other countries, including Canada lowered action levels to 5 pCi/L. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO), consisting of combined studies from scientists in 35 countries, recommended radon mitigation at levels 2.7 pCi/L or above. The indoor radon levels in Colorado can vary from 2 pCi/l to as high as 600+ pCi/L. The typical/average radon levels in Colorado range from4 pCi/l to 30 pCi/L.
The ACE Team stands apart from other radon companies in many ways. In addition to my Certification, ACE office and field employees are also certified by the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP). This level of professionalism, depth of experience, training, and ability to serve Colorado both Front Range and Mountain locations allows ACE to perform any size project with the attention to detail and service you deserve.
